Traditional night vision is achieved using Infrared (IR) cameras which are able to produce clear, high-quality images even in total darkness. The camera’s ability to capture usable footage in no light makes it ideal for security applications that require 24-hour cover with no artificial lighting. The main downside of them is that they do not show colour and appear as a black and white image.
Modern cameras are now able to render vivid colour images in extremely dim light, even down to 0.0003 lux; the same condition as a moonless starlight night. This ability to intensify minimal ambient light is achieved through much larger F1.0 apertures and 1/1/2′ sensors to capture and make use of as much light as possible.
